An intranet is a local area network (LAN) used internally in an organization that is sometimes access restricted. Typically the term refers to the internal web site.

There does not have to be any access from the organisation’s internal network to the internet itself. Where there is, there will be a firewall with a gateway through which all access takes place. This means that organisations that allow their staff internet access can normally determine which internet web sites are being viewed, block access to specific sites they don't want them to see (such as pornographic sites), and even trace offenders who persistently attempt to view them. They can also block certain types of web content (such as objects) which they consider a particular security risk.

Where external email access is provided, known sources of spam and specific types of email attachment can be blocked by the organisation. It should also be noted that emails sent and received this way can be required to be produced by the organisation in the event of legal action against it by a third party.

Interconnected Intranets During the late 1990s and early 2000s, several industries started to use the term "extranet" to describe central repositories of shared data made accessible via the web only to authorised members of particular work groups. For example, in the construction industry, project teams could login to and access a 'project extranet' to share drawings and documents, make comments, issue requests for information, etc.

Lochgardie Media often incorporates Intranets directly into public web sites. This technique allows the corporate employee to see the public elements of the corporations web site as well as the internal or intranet web site. This integration promotes cohesion and consistency of information across all aspects of the corporation's on-line presence.

Intranets within Intranets or employee access privileges provide a means where functionality or information can be disseminated on a needs basis. This aspect is vital to the operational integrity and security of the organisation. We can build restrictive access protocols into any web site we create.
